The Teenager Who Forged a Lost Shakespeare Play and Fooled London

In 1796, a seventeen-year-old clerk managed to convince London's literary elite that he had discovered a cache of unpublished William Shakespeare manuscripts, culminating in a disastrous theatrical premiere.

William Henry Ireland grew up in the late 18th century desperate for the approval of his father, Samuel Ireland, an avid collector of antique books and Shakespearean memorabilia. Knowing his father's obsession, young Ireland began forging historical documents in late 1794. Using aged paper cut from vintage books, special ink concocted from iron gall, and forged seals, he produced handwritten notes, receipts, and personal letters allegedly signed by William Shakespeare.

Thrilled by the discoveries, his father hosted public viewings where prominent literary scholars, poets, and critics praised the papers as genuine historical treasures. Emboldened by his success, Ireland escalated his deception from minor documents to an entirely fabricated lost tragedy titled Vortigern and Rowena. He claimed to have received the manuscript from a mysterious wealthy gentleman who wished to remain anonymous.

Legendary theatre manager Richard Brinsley Sheridan agreed to produce the play at the prestigious Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. However, as opening night approached on April 2, 1796, skepticism mounted, championed by prominent Shakespeare scholar Edmond Malone, who published a scathing critique detailing the forgery's linguistic inconsistencies. During the premiere performance, famous actor John Philip Kemble deliberately overacted his lines to highlight the play's absurdity, prompting the audience to erupt into laughter and ridicule.

The play closed after a single night, and Ireland was eventually forced to publish a full confession admitting to the elaborate hoax.
