Unlike conventional railways where trains sit atop twin rails, the Schwebebahn's carriages hang beneath a single overhead steel rail. Because the carriages hang freely from a single pivot point above their center of gravity, centrifugal force naturally tilts the passenger cars inward during turns, delivering a remarkably smooth ride through tight river bends without demanding complex tilting mechanisms. The elevated steel framework elevated the transit line entirely above existing streets and riverbeds, avoiding costly land acquisition in a congested valley.
