On January 5, 1993, the oil tanker MV Braer ran aground at Garths Ness on the southern tip of the Shetland Islands, discharging 84,000 tons of Gullfaks light crude oil into the North Sea. Unlike typical marine oil disasters where slick spreading on water dominates environmental damage, the Braer incident coincided with relentless, hurricane-force sea storms with winds exceeding 80 miles per hour. The violent wave action broke the light crude into microscopic droplets, which were then churned into the atmosphere by crashing sea spray and gale winds.
This created an aerated oil aerosol mist that drifted up to several miles inland, blanketing sheep pastures, freshwater reservoirs, and residential communities across the South Mainland of Shetland. Livestock consumed grass coated in hydrocarbon droplets, leading to widespread agricultural bans and immediate evacuations of animals. The high volatile organic compound content in Gullfaks crude rendered the aerosol highly inhalable, posing severe respiratory hazards to local humans and wildlife.
While heavy wave turbulence paradoxically helped disperse much of the marine slick into deep oceanic waters faster than expected, the atmospheric transport of aerated oil droplets remains one of the most unusual and hazardous landward contamination vectors in maritime disaster history.
