What made the Castle Clock a true masterpiece of engineering was its ability to compensate for 'temporal hours'—a medieval system where daylight was split into 12 equal hours regardless of the season.
To adjust for varying day lengths throughout the year, al-Jazari engineered a sophisticated outflow regulator using a submerged float and a variable orifice, allowing the operator to alter the rate of water flow daily.
