Constructed under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 532 AD, the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici) is a vast subterranean water reservoir capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters of water. Supported by 336 marble columns, the structure is a masterclass in Late Antique hydraulic engineering and material reuse. Among its most mysterious architectural elements are two massive Medusa heads repurposed as supporting bases for columns in the cistern's northwestern corner.
One head rests completely upside down, while the other is oriented sideways. While myth popularizes the idea that Byzantine builders inverted the mythological Gorgon heads to neutralize Medusa's legendary stone-turning gaze, structural engineering offers a practical explanation. Byzantine architects heavily utilized spolia—recycled marble columns and pedestals taken from older Roman buildings.
The stone blocks sculpted with Medusa heads were selected purely for their specific physical dimensions to level the uneven subterranean bedrock floor. Placing the carved faces upside down or sideways ensured a flat, perfectly horizontal resting surface for the heavy cylindrical marble shafts placed above them, optimizing load distribution. Submerged under tons of water pressure for centuries, these upside-down bases provided necessary foundational stability, showing how Byzantine builders creatively blended Roman architectural salvage with precise structural hydro-engineering.
