The house of Savoy ruled a vital trade corridor and lived in constant fear of political espionage, treason, and castle coups. They needed a secure chamber to discuss high-stakes political maneuvers, military betrayals, and treasury expenditures without domestic servants, guards, or rival envoys overhearing. To solve this security flaw, the masons constructed complex compound vaults featuring double-curved ribbing.
