In 1845, Sir John Franklin set sail with 128 men to navigate the Northwest Passage. None returned. When exhumed bodies from Beechey Island revealed astounding lead levels in the 1980s, historians thought they found the smoking gun: cheaply soldered tin cans had slowly poisoned the crew, fueling delirium, chaos, and fatal decision-making.

Newer studies reveal that 19th-century sailors routinely had elevated lead levels due to ambient environmental exposure, marine plumbing systems, and canned goods consumed prior to sailing. Enter the secondary horror: defective preservation. The provisioner, Stephen Goldner, rushed the production of over 8,000 tins of preserved meat. Poor thermal processing in giant 8-pound cans created the perfect anaerobic environment for Clostridium botulinum to thrive.
Instead of slow lead madness, crew members likely suffered from acute botulism—causing paralysis, respiratory failure, and rapid death—compounded by scurvy and starvation. While lead certainly did not help, the tragic end of HMS Erebus and Terror was less about insanity from toxic solder and more about invisible microbes lurking in poorly cooked meat.
