When Dutch engineers were tasked with connecting the mainland Netherlands to Flevoland, the world's largest artificial island, they faced a complex logistical puzzle at the Veluwemeer lake. The N302 highway needed to cross the water, carrying roughly 28,000 vehicles daily. Meanwhile, constant water traffic, ranging from small pleasure craft to ferries, needed uninterrupted passage along the lake.
The traditional options immediately hit major roadblocks. A standard drawbridge would have caused catastrophic traffic jams, halting thousands of cars every time a sailboat passed by. Building a high-clearance bridge capable of letting ships sail under it was deemed far too expensive, visually disruptive, and required steep approach ramps that consumed precious land.
A full-length underwater vehicle tunnel was also considered, but the astronomical construction costs and complex water-table management made it a non-starter. So, the engineers chose an optical illusion of engineering: the Veluwemeer Aqueduct. Opened in 2002, this 25-meter-long, 19-meter-wide water bridge allows small-draft boats to seamlessly sail across the top, while road traffic zooms unhindered below through a 3-meter-deep underpass.
By holding millions of liters of water suspended over the highway using heavy concrete structures and waterproof sheet piling, engineers saved millions of Euros compared to a conventional tunnel. The design kept both water and land traffic moving continuously without a single stoplight or toll booth, creating one of the world's most breathtaking architectural paradoxes.
