When Venice was built in the early Middle Ages, marshy mud islands provided defense but terrible structural support. Engineers solved this by driving millions of timber trunks—primarily alder, larch, and oak harvested from the forests of Slovenia and Croatia—deep into the impermeable clay layer called the caranto. Entirely submerged below the oxygenated water table and encased in dense, anaerobic silt, the wood was completely shielded from fungal organisms and bacteria that normally break down lignin and cellulose.
Without oxygen, timber cannot decay. Over centuries, the continuous exposure to mineral-rich silt and salt water caused the wood to absorb dissolved iron and calcium silicates, effectively mineralizing and petrifying the logs. This process transformed soft timber into a rock-hard foundation capable of supporting heavy brick and marble palazzos.
When workers extracted piles during restoration work near the Rialto Bridge in the 20th century, they found timber centuries old that was so hard it dulled modern steel saws. The ultimate irony of Venice's survival is that its grand stone architecture rests entirely on a buoyant, submerged wooden ecosystem that thrives precisely because it is buried in total darkness and suffocated of air.
